Cheng Design by Zephyr Trapeze Hood Wins Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Award
Fu-Tung Cheng, master designer and craftsman, has been honored with the prestigious Chicago Athenaeum GOOD DESIGN™ Award for his island ventilation hood, Trapeze. This kitchen hood was selected from thousands of applications worldwide and received the GOOD DESIGN™ Award in the Kitchen/Appliances category.
The Chicago Athenaeum’s GOOD DESIGN Awards bestow international recognition upon the world’s most prominent designers and manufacturers for advancing new and innovative product concepts, invention and originality — pushing the envelope beyond what is considered basic product and consumer design. One of the oldest design competitions in the world, the museum’s GOOD DESIGN program was founded in Chicago in 1950 by Edgar J. Kaufmann, Jr., former curator of the Museum of Modern Art. This year’s GOOD DESIGN Awards were judged in New York by an international jury of design professionals, experts and cultural leaders. The jury’s decision in awarding the GOOD DSSIGN Award was based on functional and aesthetic criteria, as well as environmental and green design concerns.

The light and airy Trapeze, the first island hood in the Cheng Design by Zephyr line, is a streamlined reprieve from its bulky, conventional counterparts. Using a delicate suspension structure, the Trapeze seems to hover delicately in mid-air. With a graceful, slow-curve canopy and directional halogen lighting, the Trapeze creates a bold, inspired statement in the kitchen.
The lightness and symmetry of the Trapeze engender a sophistication surpassed only by its elegance. With a sense of balance created by graceful curves and a unique suspended structure, the Trapeze evolves the kitchen island design to a new level of clarity. Telescopic rods make it easy to install and an optional remote blower allows the system to be upgraded to a powerful 1200 cfm.
Made of durable 16-gauge, type 304 non-magnetic stainless steel construction, the Trapeze hood’s factory-welded flue and apron eliminates on-site assembly requirements. Directional halogen lighting and front-mounted utensil rail enhance functionality, while three width options (48-inch, 54-inch and 60-inch), flue extensions and in-line or remote blower applications allow for customization.
